Notts County Football Club

Notts County Football Club
Meadow Lane

Tel: 0115 9529 000

Notts County Football Club was formed in 1862 and is the oldest football league club in the world. Meadow Lane has been clubs home ground since 1910. Previous to that, the club had played its games at the Castle Cricket Ground, Nottingham Forest's Town Ground and City Ground. The club was one of the founder members of the Football League in 1888. Notts County have a famous link with Juventus Football Club in Italy, dating back to 1899 when the Italian club played in pink - the colours of their current away kit. The club wanted a change of kit colour due to fading of their pink kit and an English team member asked his friend in England to source them a new kit. Being from Nottingham, his friend sent over the Notts County kit and since that day, Juventus have worn the black and white stripes.

The club has had ups and downs over the course of its history, claiming their only FA Cup trophy in 1894. Other notable trophies claimed over the years include the Anglo Italian Cup in 1995, Divison 2 Champions trophy, Divison 3 Champions trophy and most recently in 2010, the League 2 Champions trophy. Famous names associated to the club include England International Tommy Lawton, who signed for the club in 1949, dropping from the old first division with Chelsea, down to Division Three to join Notts - much like Wayne Rooney dropping from the Premier League to League 1 today.

Probably the most successful and well remembered manager of the clubs history is Jimmy Sirrell, who took the magpies from the bottom division, right up to the top flight during the 1970's and early 1980's. Other notable managers from recent times include Neil Warnock who guided the club back to the First Division shortly before it became the Premier League, and Sam Allardyce who guided the club to the top of Division 2 for a brief time in the late 1990's.

The club faced liquidation in the mid 1980's, but was saved thanks to money raised by supporters and this historic moment saw the launch of Lifeline, a scheme which still runs today and has raised over £3million for the club to date through its supporters.

In 2002, the first famous 'Great Escape' happened, with the club looking set to be relegated from Division 2. However, 23 points from the final 11 games meant the club stayed up with an unexpected 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town on the final day of the season, with goals from Danny Allsopp and Kevin Nicholson. The club was eventually relegated to the bottom tier in 2004 and financial insecurity loomed over the club for many years, as well as the constant threat of relegation out of the Football League.

In 2009, the club's fortunes appeared to take a turn for the better, with the arrival of wealthy new owners as well as high profile names such as Sven Goran Eriksson, Sol Campbell and Kasper Schmeichel. The fortunes ultimately turned out to be a flash in the pan and the season took on a surreal feel. Despite all this, the club achieved promotion back in to the third tier of English Football as champions of League 2.

The club has remained there ever since and as recently as 2014, pulled off another 'Great Escape' with current manager Shaun Derry in charge. After a disspointing start to the 2013/14 season, Derry took charge in November 2013 and guided the club out of the relegation places, securing the clubs safety in the final game of the season away at Oldham.

The clubs famous song is the 'Wheelbarrow Song' - and can be heard from the Kop stand on match days. The song is believed to take its origins from an away match at Shrewsbury Town where the Notts fans sang the song out of jest, believing it to be what they thought the home fans were chanting. Notts scored two late goals in the last 10 minutes and the song was seen as a good luck charm and has stuck ever since.

Notts County prides itself on being a family club, and match days are a great, affordable experience for the whole family. So if you're visiting Nottingham, make sure you see a game at Meadow Lane and watch a piece of football history with the worlds oldest football league club.
