Newark

Newark is a thriving market town located just off the A1 on the east side of Nottinghamshire. A historic town, Newark has many heritage attractions and things to do together with a range of hotels and bed and breakfasts for an overnight stay.

Famed for its role in the English Civil War, the main historic attraction in the town is Newark Castle. The castle was a Royalist stronghold and loyal to the King but its key position on the banks of the River Trent meant that the castle has been severely damaged over the years. You can also take the Newark Civil War Trail which takes in key locations around the town that relate to this incredibly interesting period.

The castle remains a terrific site in Newark and well worth a visit with its further historical links as the place where King John died during the times of Robin Hood.

Another major attraction in Newark is the bimonthly Newark Antiques Fair. Held at Newark Showground, the fair is one of the largest in Europe and traders from all over the country head to the town for this fantastic event. The Showground in Newark is also host to the annual Nottinghamshire County Show, which promotes lots of local produce and entertainment.

Being a traditional market town, Newark Town Hall stands behind the market place and is open as a Museum and Art Gallery between Monday and Saturday. As well as the markets in Newark, shoppers can also head to the Buttermarket for indoor shopping and well known high street brands.

For aviation enthusiasts, Newark Air Museum is an absolute must see attraction. As well as having a wide range of aeroplanes to see (including a Vulcan, Buccaneer and Hawker), the Museum hosts a wide range of events including open cockpit events.

For enthralling theatre, comedy, drama and more, Newark Palace Theatre is a great place to visit for evening entertainment in the town and offers cinema productions too.

With so much history and heritage in Newark, there are plenty of things to see and do and the town is a great base for exploring nearby attractions, including Sherwood Forest. You’ll find an excellent range of hotels and bed and breakfasts in Newark, together with self catering holiday cottages if you want to stay and explore the area.
